30-second sit-to-stand test

Stand up and sit down as many times as you can in 30 seconds, arms crossed. It measures lower-body strength and power — an independent predictor of fall risk, walking speed, and how well you'll tolerate the years ahead. Your phone counts each stand automatically from its motion sensor, on-device — or tap along. Where gait speed is signal one, this is signal two. Validated norms from Rikli & Jones (Senior Fitness Test).

Before you start

Use a stable, armless chair (about 17 in / 43 cm) against a wall. Sit in the middle, feet flat, arms crossed over your chest. Stand fully upright and sit back down each rep. Only do this if you can stand from a chair without using your hands. Stop if you feel dizzy, short of breath, or unsteady, and have someone nearby the first time.

phone_iphone Hold the phone flat against the center of your chest, under your crossed arms, for the whole test. It reads the up-and-down of each stand — nothing is stored or sent.

Age and sex set your normative comparison band. Everything runs in your browser — nothing is stored or sent.

directions_walk Signal one: your gait. A 20-second phone walk test measures your walking speed and steadiness — the other objective read. arrow_forward
